The Rules

Entrants must be

  • a legal resident of the United States or the District of Columbia (U.S. territories included)
  • at least eighteen (18) years of age or older by January 31st, 2017
  • planning to enroll at an Eligible Accredited Academic Institution, be it any year of an undergraduate program or the first year of a graduate program, following the time the Prizes are awarded.
    • Specifically, you must be enrolled at an Eligible Accredited Academic Institution for one of the following semesters: Fall 2017, Spring 2018, or Summer 2018. 
      • Verification of age, legal residency, and enrollment in a degree program at an Eligible Accredited Academic Institution will be required before awarding a Prize.

Exceptions

  • Employees, officers, and directors of the Templeton Press and the John Templeton Foundation, and officers and directors of entities affiliated with or advising the John Templeton Foundation and/or the Templeton Press, and their respective immediate families (parents, spouse, children, siblings) or individuals residing in their household (whether or not related), are not eligible to enter the Contest. 

Topics

To enter

Either submit an essay or video in response to one of the topics given. 

  • If submitting an essay, your original essay must meet the following requirements:
    • Between 1500 and 2000 words in length.
    • Preferably typewritten and submitted in a Word document (.doc or .docx) or PDF (.pdf) format.
    • Identify as part of your submission which topic your essay addresses.
    • Include full name, place of legal residence and email address. Email address will be used to communicate with you about the Contest.
    • State how you learned of the Contest.
      • If applying online, there will be a place to note this in the entry form. If applying by mail, please include this at the end of your essay. 
    • Submit the essay by uploading below or mailing to the Templeton Press, 300 Conshohocken State Road, Suite 665, Attn: SOAM Contest, West Conshohocken, PA 19428.
    • Expressly acknowledge that you agree to the terms and conditions of the Official Rules of the Contest.
  • If submitting a video, your original video must meet the following requirements:
    • Up to three (3) minutes in length.
    • Published to YouTube or Vimeo.
    • Identify as part of your submission which topic the video addresses.
    • Include full name, place of legal residence and email address. Email address will be used to communicate with Entrant about the Contest.
    • State how you learned of the Contest.
    • Submit the video by copying the link to your video entry into the entry form found below.
    • Expressly acknowledge that you agree to the terms and conditions of the Official Rules of the Contest.

Deadline

  • Entries must be received by Templeton Press no later than the extended deadline of January 31, 2017 at 11:59 PM EST. 

Judges and Judging

  • The Judge for the Contest is the editor of The State of the American Mind, Mark Bauerlein (“Editor”). The Editor will be assisted by staff of Templeton Press and the Editor’s students and colleagues.
  • Entries will be judged using the following criteria:
    • quality of the idea presented
    • creativity
    • skill exhibited in the medium chosen for entry
      • The entry does not need to agree with the ideas expressed in the essays and videos presented. 

Prizes

For essay entries, the winning contestants will win:

  • 1st place: $5,000 scholarship
  • 2nd place: $3,000 scholarship
  • 3rd place: $2,000 scholarship

For video entries, the winning contestants will win:

  • 1st place: $5,000 scholarship
  • 2nd place: $3,000 scholarship
  • 3rd place: $2,000 scholarship

Each Prize will be awarded to a Prize Winner through the financial aid office of the Eligible Accredited Academic Institution the Prize Winner is or will be attending for payment of tuition, fees, books, supplies and equipment required for degree courses that the Prize Winner is enrolled in as of Fall 2017 or subsequently.


NO DONATION, PURCHASE OR PAYMENT OF ANY KIND IS NECESSARY TO ENTER THE CONTEST OR WIN A PRIZE.
